Been meaning to post about it since I saw it last summer, but one of my nephews made a great little forge out of an old cast brake drum that he stocks with coke and center drives air to with just a small hand sized shop vac (out the blow side). He reported he's making a pretty good suppliment to his income just making Damascus steel knife blanks out of old steel cable. He heats and trists and forge welds sections of cable into the knife blanks using just this little forge mounted out on the deck by his garage/ workshop. Just an FYI for anyone that is interested.

Doc, tell him to try chainsaw chain for damascus, heard it gives nice contrasts in the stripes.

Thanks, will do, but he's already so awesome at it, it's spooky. As I understand the knives he personally completes have been selling for around $700-$800 each. Enough I thought I'd take a stab at it this summer.

Ive never done one myself, only hot bending and some squaring of round rod. Give it a stab, cant be too hard right?! Just may take a while to get easy.

I've had a desire to get or make a forge since high school ag mechanics class. I made a chisel from a piece of round stock...didn't get the tempering right, but enjoyed the experience. It would have helped to have had a good teacher, he had me teach the class the torches and welding since I was in welding at vo-tech that year. I found this forge http://frederick.craigslist.org/tls/1685356256.html on CL, not to far from where I live...not sure if its a good deal or not?

I'm not either, but would like to be. A local farm museum offers a couple of different level blacksmithing courses (as well as some other "primitive" arts) 2 or 3 times a year. I've been wanting to take the courses, but like many things time and or money seems to get in the way. frown
