Always nice to see a true artist at work. This guy started off as a hobbyist making nixie tubes. (neon number displays) Has now evolved into a money making business. (He gets $145 each, but seeing all he goes through that's quite reasonable.) Beyond that he is keeping an old art alive! Well worth watching!

awesome video of a craftsman at work..very limited audience for those nixies, hope he can keep the lights on making them..I always thought they were a bit smaller in envelope size.It looks like his version is bigger diameter. My best memory of these nixies is the scene in the James Bond-'Goldfinger'movie with the Ft.Knox bomb countdown timer..1962 era..

Nixie display tubes ranged in size from very small (like 3/8") to much larger than the ones in the video. The technology still has a strong following. It is a neat look. The source for a lot of the tubes in recent times is NOS from Russia. They have a finite life so some modern circuits, like clocks, try to turn them off when no one is around, to extend the life. If the guy is making a consistent reliable product he could do well. I used to belong to a "Yahoo Group" about Nixies but it moved to a "Google" platform and I didn't follow it.

They are a interesting display and have been used for some very elegant clocks.

Nixies came in many sizes. In truth the ones this guy is making are about the biggest I ever saw. I still own several old HP frequency counters and even a few meters with nixie displays. Prior to cheap LEDs they were about the only option for numeric displays besides edge lit lucite. (Which I also possess an example of.)

One of the interesting things about the video is that the process is almost identical to production of vacuum tubes (save adding the nobel gas and not adding a control grid.)

Nowadays even LED displays are vanishing in favor of LCDs.

There weren't a lot of big nixes, but they are out there. This one is about 8" tall.
