Hi Guys,

Debated just putting this in general, but since I actually have a question at the end, I thought I'd put it here.

I finally got around to fixing up my Dad's old Planet Jr. 2-wheel walking tractor. I didn't really have a job for it since we had a fence around the veggie garden that made using it impractical.

We stopped using the garden because neither one of us wanted to put in the work to keep up with it, and we no longer had access to a friends' rototiller (the wife managed to kill the little mini Honda I'd bought her before that).

I got the go ahead last year to take down the fence and use the tractor to turn the garden.

The tractor came with a Briggs 3 horse with a 6:1. Dad had worn out the original motor and had another replacement on there, but the carb on it was giving me fits. They want stupid money these days for a reduction Briggs. everyone seems to like the clone motors, but the reducer versions weren't being offered for the longest time.

Last fall I found one on Amazon. Swapped it on and the little Planet Jr. Is back to work.

Only problem is, there is a lot of gear whine from the gear case. The motor is shipped with no oil in the crank, but oil in the reducer. When I filled the crank, there was a little oil in it. After using it for a while, I checked the oil level and it was high, but I was thinking that was because the oil was warm?

Just on principle, I added oil to the gearcase. I don't actually know how much is in it. My fear is that there is either no seal or a bad seal on the gearcase end of the crank. The crank end of these is the pinion in a ring gear. But the crank meets the ring gear at about the 9-o-clock position, it "should" be above the regular gearbox oil level. What I am hoping is that the gear whine is just from the shape of the teeth on the gears.

So what I guess I am asking is, have any of you, guys messed with these reducer motors, and noticed the gears whining?

I forgot I needed to host the photos, so I will do that and post them in a follow-up.

Today my brother dropped me a line on a tiller, just needs a motor. That will be good too, probably better, but I,still feel good about having this running again.
