ok I have a old auburn trencher, http://www.film.queensu.ca/cj3b/Literature/JeepATrench.html
or
http://ytforums.ytmag.com/viewtopic.php?t=720943

and I have my home made, Humm, Custom made back hoe,

the back hoe has it own sub frame,

I do not have a tractor or a unit to mount the {edit} trencher) on, first it takes a creep transmission, (I have one for a different tractor, but no the own I own), so that does not help,

about the only way I can use the trencher now is to put the trencher on the tractor and then use a winch and move the unit forward bit by bit, as it needs to creep,

my thought was to mate the trencher to the back hoe sub frame, use a combine axle and drive it by a hydraulic motor,

the trencher was driven off the PTO of the tractor,

my thought was to find a small pickup pull the motor and drive the trencher with he drive line via the transmission, use a Hydraulic pump, to power the unit, possibly through the combines transmission, for some more speed variations, and my thought was to use a truck front axle for end up by the back hoe, (one could possibly make some thing articulated, put a blade on it for back fill if wanted, or so one did not have bring a loader on the job,

Any Ideas, or thoughts, (I have a small V6 out of a GM car my son wrecked) I think it has a distributor for ease of making it run, (no computer),
(and think I can get a clutch and manual transmission out of a S10 or some thing to make the drive to the trencher),

I would think having a self contained unit could be beneficial,

the tractor I mount the back hoe on is a little heavy for the back hoe, In other words it is hard to move the unit forward with the hoe, and one can not (hardly) lift the rear of the tractor with the arm to swing it to realign it with the trench or if you do get in a mess you really do not have enough to push the tractor out with the hoe,

Any one have any thoughts or additonal Ideas,

Interesting post but you lost me at "I do not have a tractor or a unit to mount the back hoe on,"

Sound like a great project that I would watch closely. I have access to three ih 715 front axles. I have looked at them and thought about how awesome of a machine one could make out of them.
