Are mower deck bearings or spindle parts still available? Saw an old WH for sale, bad repaint job, kind of rough, engine runs, but mower deck has some bearing noise. And if I wiggle the blade back and forth, there is some play. He said his brother wants $175.

Maurice, Wheel Horse was later sold to Toro, yes you can still get parts and bearing, if not sure what you need take on off and go to a Lawnmower shop and they can match them, and even get the complete spindal assembly, that was a good mower, good luck, Cando

Maurice Im currently rebuilding a 1964 WH. It has a crude bevel gear arrangement to drive the blades, could be the back and forth movement. The two spindles on mine are built into a single casting that bridges the mover deck. Doubt if that casting is available. Mine is broken, plan to build new spindles with ball bearings rather than the needle bearings and thrust bearing they used, then tie them into a weldament to go across the deck. Greg

Maurice, The tractor looks slightly newer but that is the same angle drive. The gears run dry, the spindle gear is straight cut steel and the alloy driving gear meshes from the side. There isn't a lot of tooth contact but mine shows surprisingly little wear. Real odd arrangement but I expect it worked as they seemed to stay with it for a number of years. Those sheet metal covers come off with 4 small bolts to see the gears. The tractor is built like a tank. The gearbox must weigh 60 or 80 pounds. Paid twice that for mine at an auction, but it was so damn cute. Tore mine apart last week then decided to build a blast cabinet to clean it up in. Will post pictures if I ever figure out how to. Greg

Greg, Dont'cha just love how many "intermediate" jobs are triggered the principle one. I'm suffering that syndrome multi-fold during the Set-up process of my new shop. Steve

That's what's called "but first syndrome"! (I gotta fix this but first I gotta build that...)
Thanks for the help!

I bought it for $150. Here is the bevel gears, they seem fine, I was not yet able to figure out how to get the splindle off to research the bearings. The snap-ring comes off and the spindle gear will move up and down but not enough clearance to come off the shaft. Tried removing 4 bolts from under this. Anyone know a good wheel horse site (before I start googling?)

Maurice, Once I got the snap-ring off and grease fitting out the shaft just tapped out with the help of a brass drift, There's a thrust bearing under the gear and two needle bearings on the spindle. Your gears look in beter shape than mine. The casting that runs under the deck was broken on mine and not lined up quite right when welded, hence the gears wore a bit but think they'll be ok. Haven't got the bevel gear off yet, afraid to pull to hard in case the alloy gear breaks. Try this site,http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wheelhorsetractormanuals/. Found the manual for my 854 there and the mover at https://lookup3.toro.com/partdex/index.cfm?xCaller=Toro Good luck Greg

yup, got signed up at the wheelhorsetractormanuals group last night, and someone suggested that the 1961-1966 mower manuals are in yahoo group 5, just signed up there a minute ago!
The blade shaft seems to be held on my the key - the gear will slide up and down after I took off the snap ring. I didn't want to force it until I knew for sure. I'll look at the toro linky.

Downloaded a parts drawing. Got it apart. Found out the hard way that the gear on the blade spindle needs to come off first! Maybe unbolt the horozontal shaft? I "punched" the shaft down thru the gear and sheared off the woodruff key. The lower bearing lost all it's needles and the shaft seems "ok". Not great but usable. The Toro parts store has the bearings ($7.25 each x 2 per side) and the woodruff key ($0.94) Thanks!

Now that I think back I sheared the key too. Sorry should have remembered. Too bad your not closer I'd give you the bearings out of mine. I have to build new spindles as that housing is broken. Am going to a larger housing and a ball bearing.

That's ok Greg! I've spent some time on the wheelhorsetractormanuals group. They have so many manuals and service bulletins that it takes up 10 yahoo groups to have the space to store them! Saw a bulletin that thier newer woodruff keys are harder. I think mine may have been brass or soft. I ordered the parts, wife is hoping they arrive by the weekend!

Got the bearings replaced, blades sharpened, gas tank and carb cleaned, ran mower, wife planned to use it next day, ran a bit then stopped, clean it again, repeat, wife thinks this may be possessed the way it doesn't like her. All she wants is something that starts easy. Been debating putting new engine on it for her. Also contemplating a tiller for the garden, grass catcher to use clippings for the garden, and more. The friend who gave me the 3 old trucks and a few trailer loads of junk, cleaned out another load of junk. Look what showed up in my yard! (none of it works at the moment) And one new gas powered blower that was in a flood 2 years ago, and another gas powered blower. Gotta get back to the man cave to fix this stuff!

I plan to! 20+ years ago I had a 16hp kohler Cub Cadet - I did not know what I know now. I'm trying to find some manuals on it so I do it right. Previous owner was high of praise for it, and maybe almost changed his mind.
